Introduction
Designed by Andre Regagnon, and engraved by
Jules Piel, here is a calm and majestic Marianne, at the bow of a ship, representing
France. The sun is rising, a wind is in the sails, and all looks good for the Republic.
This was the only stamp ever designed by
Regagnon.

Signatures
Artist's Proofs,
or Die Proofs are made by hand from the unhardened die. Early
die proofs were made by the artist, thus the term "Artist's Proof." These
typically have an embossed control seal, and are signed in pencil by the artist and/or
engraver. The artist/designer always signs on the left, and the engraver on the right,
unless they are the same, then the signature appears on either side.* |
